You might have heard rumours of an exercise class that gives you the sculpted body of a ballet dancer, with no actual dancing experience required.
While it sounds too good to be true, it’s not; Barre class is a hot new trend for a very good reason - it delivers exactly what it promises.
As an added bonus, you’ll get to relive your childhood prima ballerina dreams - without the leotards and pointe shoes!
Here’s everything you need to know.
What exactly is Barre Class?
The Barre workout is a fusion of ballet, yoga and pilates. Usually 55 minutes in length, the class gives a complete body workout, designed to tone your entire body and give you long, lean muscles.
Barre classes are set to pumping popular music tracks rather than Tchaikovsky, and are suitable for people with no dance experience.
What’s the appeal?
Barre classes borrow from childhood ballet classes, practicing plies and tendus at the barre, with a twist. The focus in this class is on getting toned and having fun, rather than the perfect ballet turnout.
What should I expect?
Get ready for a serious low-impact workout, particularly to the legs, bottom, thighs and arms.
Classes begin with a fast and flowing warm up, with fun music pumping. While the barre classes are ballet-inspired, you won’t be expected to perform difficult maneuvers like pirouettes.
Instead, you’ll be introduced to basic positions and steps like the plie, with the focus on working all of the small muscle groups in the body and developing a strong core.
After the warmup, which can include anything from arm exercises using small hand weights, to abdominal work on the floor, classes move on to easy-to-follow sequences of steps, usually at the barre.
Extra pilates props like balls and bands intensify the moves, giving an intense, sweat-inducing workout.
What are the benefits?
Get a lean, ballet body while having fun! As well as working your body, Barre classes are a way to break out of a boring gym routine and really enjoy yourself.
Taking regular Barre classes will also transform your body. The exercises are designed to sculpt muscles without bulking up, giving you a lean, strong body.
Regular Barre class participants can expect to see improved posture, coordination and flexibility, toned arms, stomach, hips, thigh and butt, increased core strength and increased endurance.
Why not get out there and give it a go?
